Headless Horseman Hill — A Texas Ghost Story
Published October 20, 2024
Texas is full of legends and ghost stories passed down through generations. One of the most chilling is the tale of Headless Horseman Hill — a story that has haunted the Texas Hill Country for over 150 years.
The legend dates back to the days when cattle rustlers and Texas Rangers clashed across the open range. As the story goes, a notorious outlaw met his end on a lonely hill near San Diego, Texas — and to send a message to other rustlers, his body was tied to his horse and set loose. The horse wandered the brush country for weeks before the body was finally cut down.
Locals say that on certain nights you can still hear hoofbeats on the hill, and travelers have reported seeing a headless rider silhouetted against the moon. Whether you believe it or not, it makes for one heck of a campfire story.
If you're traveling through South Texas in your RV, ask the old-timers about it — chances are they'll have their own version of the tale to share.
