Loading Tips for Toy Haulers
Published April 8, 2024
A toy hauler is only as good as how well you load it. Whether you're hauling ATVs, motorcycles, or golf carts — proper loading makes all the difference in towing safely and protecting your gear.
Know your weights. Start with your toy hauler's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity). Add up your toys, fuel, water, and gear — and stay well under the limit.
Load heavy items low and centered. Putting a 700-pound ATV up high or off to one side will throw off the trailer's balance and make towing dangerous.
Use proper tie-downs. Ratchet straps rated for the weight of your toys, anchored to the floor D-rings — never to thin sheet metal.
Mind your tongue weight. Aim for 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight on the hitch. Too little tongue weight causes dangerous sway.
When in doubt, stop and re-check before you hit the highway. A few extra minutes at the loading ramp can prevent a disaster on the interstate.
