How to Modify a Travel Trailer for Travelers with Disabilities

Published August 25, 2024

RVing should be accessible to everyone. With the right modifications a travel trailer can be made fully functional and comfortable for travelers with mobility challenges or disabilities.

Entry: A portable aluminum ramp or a permanently installed wheelchair lift makes getting in and out safe and easy. Widening the doorway is also an option for some floorplans.

Bathroom: Roll-in showers, grab bars, and a raised toilet are common modifications. Many RV upfitters can do the work in a week.

Kitchen: Lowered countertops, pull-out cabinet shelves, and lever-style faucets make the space usable from a seated position.

Floor space: Removing the dinette and replacing it with a clear turning radius is often the biggest single improvement.

Talk to an RV accessibility specialist before you buy — some floorplans are dramatically easier to modify than others. The freedom of the road belongs to everyone.
